It has become a bit controversial to carry weapons, but I carry anyway. Openly: knife and pistol.
People who raise an eyebrow get a friendly smile and explanation.
People who whine get a polite but stern explanation.
Honestly, most people seem to assume I'm a policeman... others for reasons I cannot imagine take me for a bounty hunter. Most seem quite surprised when I say "no, sir/ma'am - I'm just a law abiding citizen exercising my natural right and responsibility to see to my own protection."
It does help to be perfectly friendly and open about it.
And it helps to get it in your bones that there really is nothing odd about going armed.
If you honestly believe it and feel totally natural about it, it seems to disarm most people's anxiety (*most* people, not all. people who carry their anti-gun obsession around like a club to beat people with cannot be reached - they have religion: shun them).
But the thing is - people who go armed in a manner or with an attitude of making a big stink about the fact that they are armed also hurt the cause. Being brassy, loud, abrasive, confrontational about it while carrying in public does not help anyone.
Save the heated arguments for the internet.
Be smooth, calm, polite, even humorous out there in The World.
If someone asks you why you carry, there's no need to thump chest and declaim from atop a soapbox - it is better, I've found, to smile and ask "don't you think I'd look silly carrying a cop around on my hip?"
From the reaction, you can gauge whether or not the person is worth further discussion.
So, anyway:
If you are going to do this thing then do it right, and do it all the way. If you decide to carry a weapon, please be responsible - and that goes well beyond knowing the rules of engagement and modifying your behavior to be more conflict-avoiding than are unarmed people.
It is a part of situational awareness I don't recall seeing emphasized, and it really ought to be:
Call it "Social Awareness."

BECAUSE I'M NOT STUPID
Because I'm not an abject moron like the alien overlords were in that anti-capitalism sermon masquerading as a sci-fi/CGI epic movie... in the spirit of "how it should have ended" I now present:
"HOW 'JUPITER ASCENDING' SHOULD HAVE ENDED"
(yadda-yadda-intro-yadda-yadda)
Ratlike Minion: "My lord, we have confirmed the DNA profile, it is her"
Lord Valdemort, Jr.: "Very well, Mr. Pettigrew, execute plan A"
- Jupiter Jones shows up at the fertility clinic,
- a small tactical nuke in the building goes off,
- event blamed on terrorists,
- sheeple/crop lulled back to sleep,
- villains win,
- fade to black, roll credits.

THANKSGIVING
What a week.
What a year.
What am I thankful for?
Let me start with the obvious. Considering that I should have been dead and in the ground over a year since, I'm thankful to be not only above-ground but hale and hearty and in impossibly excellent basic physical health. I'm thankful to all who helped make this happen - from the mother and step-father who raised me to be tough, to my wonderful Shelby Gordonsdottir who woke me when my heart began to die, to the medical professionals who stabilized and fixed me and set me on the path to recovery (with instructions I generally follow ), and even to whatever that was that gave me the choice

Another Friend Gone
Lost a friend last night to a car wreck.
Death... We do a very thorough job of putting it out of our minds.
And perhaps we do too good a job...
The fact remains that we are all being hunted by Death, and without exception every single one of us will go into the bag. The best we can do is to take reasonable precautions, but at the same time to be sure to live fully every single moment - because it really could be the last one given us. My dog would advise you to love who you love, every possible moment. Dogs know this stuff 24/7... we humans need to be reminded.
I didn't know Cody all that well, but every moment I spent around him I was aw
